About the Ballet
Canadian choreographer James Kudelka has a highly-deserved reputation for creating some of the most imaginative, striking and emotionally compelling versions of the classic ballet repertoire to be seen anywhere today. His ability to give a fresh, contemporary resonance to long established works through locating in them new sources of dramatic import, humour and thematic interest is second to none.
His 2004 re-imagining of Cinderella is a case in point. Without losing any of the classic story's simple fairy tale appeal, Kudelka manages to retain--and indeed enhance--both the romantic and comedic aspects of the ballet, while at the same time finding in it something more than the conventional rags-to-riches fantasy narrative. Exploiting the complex energies of Prokofiev's score to the full, Kudelka creates out of the original a story of individual growth and transformation through love and a fuller vision of the world and nature.
With breathtaking, Erté-inspired Art Deco sets, costumes by David Boechler and Christopher Dennis' imaginative lighting design, the National Ballet's Cinderella is pure enchantment.
For Celia, with my deepest gratitude. JK

A veritable feast for the eye, it has all the necessary stage magic to enrapture children and a handsome enough quota of sly wit and inventive choreography to satisfy devoted ballet fans"
